Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he shall receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.

James 1:12

Why should we persevere? Sometimes life gives us hardship after hardship. Friends fail us. Others may be hostile to our faith. We lose people close to us. It may feel like a mountain of trouble buried us.
Yet look at this promise. First it calls us blessed when we persevere through trials. God gives us a blessing when we endure life’s struggles. This means it IS possible not to be defeated. We CAN endure the challenges coming our way.
Also, know that your struggles are a test. James 1:3 says it’s the “testing of our faith.” When we go through difficulty, will we still trust and depend on God? The pressure to give up may be enormous, but look at Hebrews 11 for the example of other believers facing hardship. For example, God tested Abraham’s faith through waiting until Sarah bore Isaac. He turned 100 before she finally had his son and he still trusted in God up until that time. Why should we persevere? Because of the examples of other believers who did so.

Finally, those of us who persevere in faith receive God’s promised crown of life. The trials of this life will not last; they will end one day, but God’s gift of life will never end. Whatever tough experiences we will undergo here can’t compare to what God offers in heaven to those who love Him. 2 Corinthians 4:17 says, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” Why should we persevere? Because our troubles will exist as a small blip on our timeline compared to the eternal joy and peace we will receive in the Lord’s presence.
We believers in Jesus can and will persevere in His strength. We will outlast our troubles because God is at work within us as we depend on Him.
Let us go unwavering through our trials firmly clasping the hand of our faithful God.
