2023 writing goals

Happy New Year everyone!

In the latter part of 2022, I began writing “A Father’s Shadow” after abandoning my superhero kids’ book. I had thought speculative fiction was the way to go, but God had moved me into the Inspirational Fiction market. I find writing about spiritual topics and discussions easier to do than inserting them into a science fiction world. They flow from me faster as well.

Writing a book has opened my eyes to my growth potential as a writer. I have farther to go in my skills, but I’m thankful for the opportunity to test them. I’ve not surpassed my longest short story yet in terms of word count which was 15,000+ words. However, I’m at the 14,000 words point so I’m closing in fast.

Looking ahead to my 2023 writing goals, I’m planning on finishing my first draft by April 1st, and wrapping up rewriting and editing by July 1st. Then my book enters the desk drawer because I’ve received advice not to sell your first book as the quality doesn’t usually measure up to traditional publishing standards. I won’t consider it a wasted effort because I’ve learned so much about my writing weaknesses during the time. Currently, I’m getting closer to the middle of the book, so it’ll be interesting to see how that goes.

For Christmas, I received three writing craft books, one by Donald Maas and two by James Scott Bell. I’m looking also to finish these while I write my first draft. Additionally, I received “The Priceless Collection” by Davis Bunn to aid my venture into the inspirational fiction market.

I’ve offered you a glimpse into my 2023 writing goals. Maybe you can keep me accountable. 🙂 I hope this new year will bring many blessings for you and you may be filled with the joy of Christ.
