Years ago, a certain seventh grader said to his substitute English teacher, “I hate poetry.” In response, she
gave an impassioned lecture on why poetry should be enjoyed. Yesterday, this boy-turned-man
made a willing try at wriing poetry. In the research online, one author suggested taking a topic and writing
whatever comes to mind for thirty minutes. I tried this and the poem formed into a series of rhyming
couplets. I was surprised with how the words flowed out of my pen without stopping. In my prose writing,
I often pause to think and then write more.
Now my poem is too personal and simplistic to put on this blog, but it was good to create and perhaps cathartic.
After giving a willing try at writing poetry, I plan to dabble in it, but fiction writing will still be my main focus. If I ever
create something readable, I’ll post it here.
